Tennessee football’s top five performers in 34-27 OT win at Pitt
4 tackles (2 solo); 1 sack; 2 TFLs; 1 QB hurry; 1 FF
Yes, both edge rushers belong on this list. They had help from the pressure in the middle that Omari Thomas and Kurott Garland brought. Both players had a pass deflection. LaTrell Bumphus, Da’Jon Terry and Dominic Bailey each had a hurry. This helped all the edge rushers, as Roman Harrison had five tackles, a tackle for a loss and two hurries.
However, issues in the run game are what kept us from putting any of the interior linemen on this list, and Harrison didn’t make as many crucial plays as Tyler Baron and Byron Young. As a result, Baron and Young are the ones who made it. Baron was critical for Tennessee football.
Yes, Young had more solo tackles and more quarterback hurries while they had the same number of tackles, sacks and tackles for a loss. On that front, you could make a case for Young to be in the higher spot. However, we just can’t ignore the big play Baron made.
Late in the first half, with UT up 21-17, Baron strip-sacked Kedon Slovis. Thomas recovered the fumble, and that set up a field goal for the Vols at the end of the half. Such a huge play has to warrant Baron being higher up on the list. Unfortunately, it was also the play that got Slovis hurt, but you still have to credit Baron for the fumble.
