Pick Analysis. Defensive back. Scouting Report. Senior. Trevon Flowers. 3. player. 839

7 tackles (4 solo); 1 sack; 1 INT

Here is our one player who made a critical mistake in the game. Trevon Flowers muffed a punt in the fourth quarter as he tried to catch it over his head, setting up Pitt for the game-tying touchdown in regulation. There’s no excuse for a fifth-year senior to do that. However, Flowers clearly made up for it in this game.

Early on, before that mistake, Flowers had the play that got them going. Tennessee football was down 10-0, and Pitt drove down to their 21-yard line, knocking on the door to make it 17-0. Flowers stepped up, though, and came away with an interception, which sparked the Vols’ first touchdown drive and got them going.

Then came overtime. UT had just given up a first down on a 4th and 5, and that fourth down was brought up from 3rd and 13, so they had every reason to be upset. However, on 3rd and goal, Flowers came in on a blitz and sacked Nick Patti, forcing him back to the 20. That resulted in the incomplete pass on 4th and goal from the 20 to secure UT the win.

Those two plays alone are enough to put Flowers on here despite his critical mistake. Following Paxton Brooks’ blocked punt plus his shanked first-half punt, special teams were an issue all day. However, one player who avoids that criticism is Chase McGrath, who hit both attempts, including a 51-yarder, so he deserves a shoutout here.
