Offensive grades part II

Wide receiver: B+

Cedric Tillman dropped a couple of passes early on. Those were key drops that keep this from being in the A range. However, He also had nine catches for 162 yards and a score. Bru McCooy had four catches for 58 yards and a score. Jalin Hyatt had 11 catches for 73 yards. This unit was mostly fine in the game.

Tight end: D

Yes, Jacob Warren had a key 24-yard grab to set up Tennessee football’s first touchdown, and Princeton Fant had an eight-yard catch. However, Fant also had a first-quarter drop. Warren had a false start. Later, Fant killed a drive because he missed a block that resulted in a sack, and then he had an offensive pass interference. These were awful plays that nearly made this an F.

Offensive line: C-

A slightly below average run game and then allowing three sacks would seem to warrant this unit getting in the D-range. However, the Vols were facing the best pass-rush team over the past seven years, and given what Pitt usually does, they were actually above average there. That combined with too many penalties warrants a mediocre grade on this one.

Overall offensive grade: C-

What happened in the second half with crucial penalties and a terrible fumble to kill drives pushes this grade to nearly below average. Still, they had over 400 yards, and they scored 27 points in regulation. That overtime touchdown pushes Tennessee football’s offense to the mediocre range.
