Defeated Arizona Wildcats 39-17

It looks like it happened a year earlier than it did with the Washington State Cougars, but Mike Leach’s program with the Mississippi State Bulldogs appears to have put it all together. With so much talent back, that was to be expected, and based on what they did over the weekend, they are rolling as a program.

Leach and co. got revenge on the Memphis Tigers in a blowout win to start the season, and Memphis could be a solid Group of Five team. They did blow out the Navy Midshipmen the next week. Heading out to the west coast and in that time zone, though, to drop another blowout win, this time on the road, was huge.

Movement from other teams is why we could move MSU in our SEC Power Rankings, but blowing out the Arizona Wildcats looks impressive for now. After all, that team looks much better than last year’s team given how it beat the San Diego State Aztecs 38-20 to open the season.

A chance to move up is just around the corner, though, as they visit LSU this week. If they win, 5-0 is on the table with the Bowling Green Falcons and Texas A&M Aggies coming to town after that. There’s a brutal October stretch with Arkansas, Kentucky and Alabama, but they could make a lot of noise before then.
