Tennessee football flirting with top of SEC Power Rankings for Week 2 of 2022
Lost to Kansas State Wildcats 40-12
Although they have a better win than many other teams on this list while their loss is to a Power Five team, the way the Missouri Tigers lost to the Kansas State Wildcats is what’s so concerning here. Eli Drinkwitz’s team once again looks like it’s taking a step backward, something that was first on display when they got blown out by Tennessee football last year.
This program fired Barry Odom after three straight bowl eligible seasons because they felt they could be better than the 6-6 to 8-4 range. It didn’t hire its former offensive coordinator, current Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel, away from the UCF Knights to take that next step.
Well, after showing signs in 2020 with a lot of shocking wins, Mizzou appears to be exactly what they were when Odom was fired. In fact, they may not be worse. Losing to KSU on the road is one thing, but getting blown out in that manner is something that just can’t happen.
Their blowout win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs is nullified now. To be fair, they will get a break with Abilene Christian coming to town this week, and a visit to the Auburn Tigers the next week is winnable. They desperately need that win, though, or with the Georgia Bulldogs up next, they’ll be in serious trouble.
