Tennessee football flirting with top of SEC Power Rankings for Week 2 of 2022
Defeated San Jose State Spartans 24-16
We move on to another tier in our SEC Power Rankings. This one includes teams who are still undefeated but have not played like upper-echelon SEC programs. They have a Group of Five win and a win against a non-FBS foe, and in their one win over an FBS team, they were highly unimpressive. The Auburn Tigers are the first team in this group.
Bryan Harsin’s drama seems to have gone by the wayside, but Auburn scored an ugly win over the weekend against the San Jose State Spartans. They didn’t particularly look that great in their opener against the Mercer Bears, and that’s what keeps them down here in our rankings.
Nonetheless, they are 2-0, and that’s better than six other teams in the conference, so no matter what anybody on the outside is saying about them, they haven’t lost out on anything yet. At the same time, though, they haven’t been tested. That’s about to immediately change.
Up next for Auburn is a home matchup with the Penn State Nittany Lions. James Franklin’s team is back in the top 25 after beating the Ohio Bobcats, and they beat the Purdue Boilermakers just barely to open the season. Tennessee football knows how tough Purdue is. Anyway, a win by Auburn here would vault them up this list, so this is their chance.
