Lost to Arkansas Razorbacks 44-30

Say what you want, but the South Carolina Gamecocks do have a dominant win over a Group of Five team. They beat the Georgia State Panthers 35-14, which was better than what Ole Miss or Auburn looked like against their only FBS foes. Tennessee football fans know what it was like to lose to Georgia State in their opener three years ago.

As a result, South Carolina is higher than both teams in our SEC Power Rankings despite having a loss. That loss was to another Power Five program, and an SEC program at that, as they fell to the Arkansas Razorbacks this past weekend. However, they fell to the Hogs on the road.

It’s not like they got blown out either. Sure, Arkansas was in control of the game, but that program is in much better shape right now than the program Shane Beamer inherited. South Carolina still has a chance to be a solid program his second year, and this one game won’t define that.

Although they face Georgia this week, they host the Charlotte 49ers and South Carolina State Bulldogs, so all signs point to getting to 3-2 soon enough. Down the stretch, they still have Texas A&M, Missouri, Vanderbilt and Tennessee football, who will play them on the road for a seventh straight game without a bye. As a result, they can still accomplish a lot.
