Tennessee football flirting with top of SEC Power Rankings for Week 2 of 2022
Defeated Southern Jaguars 65-17
Okay, okay. Technically, the LSU Tigers belong in the same tier as Vanderbilt and Missouri. In fact, they are a tier below them in some ways. LSU joins Texas A&M as the only two teams to not beat an FBS opponent in the SEC so far this year, and that allows for the case to keep them next to last in our SEC Power Rankings for now.
However, recency and margin of victory have to play some role. LSU’s only loss was by one point after tons of miscues on special teams to the Florida State Seminoles. They turned right around and gave Brian Kelly his first win by dropping 60 in a game. You just can’t ignore those things.
As a result, all signs point to LSU being a somewhat middle of the pack team in the league, and that’s where we’re putting them for now in our SEC Power Rankings. They still look like a team Tennessee football should beat, but they are clearly dangerous, so the Vols need to watch out.
That game is in October, though. Before that, they actually get an intriguing matchup this week with the Mississippi State Bulldogs at home. Then they face the New Mexico Lobos and visit Auburn. That puts 4-1 on the table, but 2-3 is also a possibility. We’ll find out more about this team soon enough.
