Tennessee football flirting with top of SEC Power Rankings for Week 2 of 2022
Defeated Texas Longhorns 20-19
Sorry, but the Alabama Crimson Tide don’t deserve to be higher on this list yet. We have to take into account not just the level of opponent but what that opponent has done so far. Their season-opening opponent, the Utah State Aggies, just lost to the Weber State Wildcats. That’s enough to say this team’s other Group of Five win is a bad one.
Meanwhile, Alabama struggled to put away a Texas Longhorns team on the road that lost its quarterback last Saturday. They also got away with quite a few questionable calls to pull that on e out. Comparing that to what other teams have done so far, we have to drop them one spot in our SEC Power Rankings.
Now, Bama can still take pride in the fact that they have a road win. Those things come into play too, and if we’re taking projections into account, obviously they should be higher on this list. It’s likely they’ll be No. 1 again soon enough. However, they have to prove it on the field first.
That won’t happen this week with a visit from the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, and it won’t happen the next week with a visit from Vanderbilt. It all starts for them in October when they visit Arkansas and Tennessee football. As of right now, those seem like the big early SEC tests for them, but that could change.
