Tennessee football Week 1 NFL recap: Derek Barnett, Ja’Wuan James out for year, Cordarrelle Patterson, Cam Sutton shine
Former Vols who didn’t play
Matthew Butler – DT – Las Vegas Raiders
A fifth-round draft pick from the Vols in 2022, it’s a bit shocking that Matthew Butler didn’t play in the opener for the Raiders as they lost 24-19 to the Chargers. He will likely eventually see action, though, as all signs point to him being valuable on the line.
Joshua Dobbs – QB – Cleveland Browns
With the wait on for Deshaun Watson to return, Josh Dobbs is the backup to Jacoby Brissett for now. Brissett is getting some hype for leading the Browns to victory, but it’s hard to see this lasting for 11 weeks, so Dobbs may still get his chance in the future before Watson returns.
Velus Jones Jr. – WR – Chicago Bears
A third-round draft pick in 2022, Velus Jones Jr. was supposed to have an early impact for the Bears. Chicago did win without him, but they only scored 19 points, so it seems like they could use Jones going forward.
Cade Mays – OL – Carolina Panthers
Two former Tennessee football players didn’t see any action as Cleveland beat Carolina Sunday. Cade Mays was a sixth-round draft pick who is still deemed a bit of a tweener, so he didn’t see action for them on Sunday.
Former Vols on practice squads
Micah Abernathy – DB – Green Bay Packers
Theo Jackson – DB – Tennessee Titans
John Kelly – RB – Cleveland Browns
Jonathan Kongbo – DE – Denver Broncos
Khalil McKenzie – OL – Baltimore Ravens
Although Cordarrelle Patterson and Cam Sutton were stars, the story for Tennessee football this weekend surrounds the multiple injuries. That’s devastating for Derek Barnett and Ja’Wuan James, and everybody is hoping Trey Smith is okay.
