Tennessee football: Five Akron Zips to watch for against Vols

They don’t run the ball well, but Akron still relies on the run game a good bit. Cam Wiley, who transferred to Akron after three years with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, is over halfway to matching his entire career totals before this year after just two games. That includes rushing yards and yards from scrimmage. He already did it in touchdowns.
Wiley has 31 carries for 114 yards and four catches for 21 yards. He has two rushing touchdowns as well. In the opener, he had 84 yards on 21 carries along with both of his touchdowns, and he also had nine yards on three catches. He can be excused for struggling against an elite defense like the Michigan State Spartans.
Even with questionable averages, Wiley’s role is huge. In Moorhead’s RPO, he’ll be just as key to catching the Vols’ defense off-guard. They gave up multiple big plays last week to the Pittsburgh Panthers, and that was a standard rush offense. How will they be against RPOs?
All of that is still a bit of a question, and Wiley will have a chance to exploit that if they aren’t ready. Omari Thomas, for all his big plays, made some mistakes last week in positioning, and that is what running backs on RPOs can take advantage of the most, so watch out.
