Gambling odds according to WynnBET

  • Line: Mississippi State -2.5

  • Moneyline: Mississippi State -140; LSU +115

All of a sudden, the Mississippi State Bulldogs’ offense has taken off under Mike Leach. After blowing out the Arizona Wildcats, they are where Tennessee football would have been had they hired Leach back in 2018, like they should have. Blowing out Arizona and the Memphis Tigers, a solid Group of Five team, to start the season is a good sign.

Meanwhile, the LSU Tigers rebounded nicely from their heartbreaking loss to the Florida State Seminoles, obliterating the Southern Jaguars 65-17 for their first win ever under Brian Kelly. This team still has some talent, which is why they’re still somewhat of a bellwether game for Tennessee football when the two face off in October.

You’re dealing with a program trying to prove it’s arrived for its level and a program hoping to be on the rise to one day having a dynasty. It’s an interesting time for this matchup, and after Leach began the downward spiral of the program under Ed Orgeron by beating them two years ago, he could slow Kelly’s rise there.

Prediction

Sure, Mississippi State is rolling right now. However, this is always the type of game they lose under Leach. LSU still has a lot of talent and is capable of winning these games under Kelly. They lost their first game due to special teams woes, but MSU has those issues two.

Remember, the Bulldogs have already missed two extra points on the year. As a result, this will be one of those games, with the Death Valley crowd roaring at night, that Leach’s offense doesn’t take off. LSU will win outright in the process, so take the upset. With Leach’s offense sputtering, also take the under.

LSU: 27 Mississippi State: 20 (LSU +2.5; Under 53.5)
