4. Penalties remain an issue

They deserve credit for not turning the ball over once again, as Tennessee football still seems to be running a relatively clean offense each game. However, that doesn’t mean the Vols are mistake-free, and although most of them came when the game was in hand, they still committed far too many penalties for anybody to be comfortable with.

UT had 11 penalties for 118 yards. The most egregious was a personal foul by Jimmy Calloway in which he threw multiple punches against an Akron defensive back which got him ejected. The penalties were stupid, and you have to now question what will happen with him in games of greater importance if that issuer persists.

Although Akron committed the first three penalties, two offsides and a pass interference, the Vols then began to have their issues. Bru McCoy had a touchdown catch wiped out due to offensive pass interference. He then had another PI on the next drive. It was forgotten because the Vols scored on both of those drives.

Both of Akron’s trips to the red zone were helped out by penalties by the safeties, as Jaylen McCollough had a holding penalty on the drive that ended in a fumble, and Trevon Flowers had a pass interference on their first field goal drive. These things have to be cleaned up before Florida.
