Tennessee football vs. Akron: Live stream, game time, TV and radio, betting preview
Coming off a huge top 25 road win at the Pittsburgh Panthers, Tennessee football returns home to face its second MAC opponent in three weeks. The Vols, now ranked No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll, are set for their final matchup before starting SEC play.
Heading into town are the Akron Zips. Led by first-year head coach Joe Moorhead, Akron is coming off a 1-11 season and has started this year 1-1. They beat the St. Francis Red Flash 30-23 in overtime to open the season and lost to the Michigan State Spartans 52-0 last week.
This is the third matchup in history between Tennessee football and Akron. The Vols beat them 52-9 in 1989 and 47-26 in 2012. Their first game this year against a MAC foe saw UT beat the Ball State Cardinals 59-10 in the opener. Here is all the information you need for this game.

It’s Moorhead’s second trip to Knoxville as a head coach. He led the Mississippi State Bulldogs into Neyland Stadium back in 2019, and the Vols, led by Jeremy Pruitt, won 20-10. UT was 1-4 at the time, and the win was actually considered an upset.
Many key players from that Vols team who saw significant action in that game are still there, including Trevon Flowers, Jaylen McCollough, Darnell Wright, LaTrell Bumphus, Jerome Carvin, and Kurott Garland. Other key players this year who were on that team include Cedric Tillman, Solon Page III and Warren Burrell.
If Rocky Top wins this game, it’ll be their first 3-0 start since 2016, when they started the year 5-0. In fact, that 2016 season is their only 3-0 start dating back to 2005, and it’s tied for their best season since 2008. As a result, don’t underestimate the significance of such a start.
Up next for Tennessee football will be a visit from the Florida Gators in a week. Then they have their bye before visiting the LSU Tigers Oct. 8. Akron, meanwhile, visits the Liberty Flames before beginning MAC play Oct. 1 at the Bowling Green Falcons
