Tennessee football: Highlights from Vols’ 63-6 win vs. Akron
Obviously, hitting the 60s is always going to come with lots of highlights, and that was no different for Tennessee football in its 63-6 victory over the Akron Zips Saturday night. There were multiple beautiful touchdown passes, and it wasn’t just one quarterback making the throw either.
Meanwhile, the defense was able to make some big plays that everybody would want to look back on as well. For the second straight week, the defense did its job, and in this case, they kept Akron out of the end zone, which is a huge deal for a team coached by Josh Heupel.
Things didn’t start off smoothly with a drive that ended in a missed field goal to open the game, but the Vols got going after that, scoring six straight touchdowns after that. Those scores and even scores after that created lots of moments for Tennessee football fans to look back on. Let’s take a look at some of those highlights here.
Jaylen Wright two-yard touchdown run
Dylan Sampson nine-yard touchdown run
Hendon Hooker 57-yard touchdown pass to Jalin Hyatt
LaTrell Bumphus recovers Akron fumble forced by Jeremy Banks and Trevon Flowers in the end zone
Hendon Hooker 48-yard touchdown pass to Jalin Hyatt
Jaylen Wright one-yard touchdown run
Joe Milton III 57-yard touchdown pass to Ramel Keyton
Not every highlight could make the list. Milton had a 38-yard touchdown pass to Walker Merrill, and Tayven Jackson even had a few nice throws at the end of the game. It was a highly efficient performance by the UT quarterbacks all around, although it was against Akron. That is really what drove the entertainment in this game.
Still, the ground game was dominant, and that’s actually what made this a blowout, which is why it was important to show the two touchdown runs by Jaylen Wright. That is still the base of Josh Heupel’s offense, and it was on display in this game, even if the receivers got the big plays.
Now, Tennessee football has to find a way to generate those highlights against the Florida Gators next week. In spite of all the hype behind UT and the lack of respect for Florida, you can just never trust the Vols in that game. We’ll see what happens there, but at least this one provided a show.
