Tennessee football: Photo gallery from Vols’ 63-6 win vs. Akron
They were facing the worst team on their schedule and maybe one of the five worst teams in FBS play. It was also a non-conference game for a Tennessee football team stuck between a huge road victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers and their SEC opener next week against the Florida Gators. Simply put, it had every reason to be forgettable.
Nonetheless, the Vols managed to sell out Neyland Stadium as they beat the Akron Zips 63-6 Saturday night. They didn’t let any hangover or any issue related to looking ahead get the best of them, and in the process, they put together a dominating performance. This just shows how hungry fans are for success.
With a sellout and another explosive offensive game, Josh Heupel and the Vols gave lots of fans plenty of images to look back on. Let’s take a look at some of those now. Here are notable photos from Tennessee football’s second victory over a MAC opponent in three weeks.
It wasn’t just a sellout. This was a day after the 50th anniversary of Tennessee football’s first night-game at home. The No. 7 ranked Vols beat the No. 6 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions 28-21 on Sept. 16, 1972 with Bill Battle as head coach and Condredge Holloway at quarterback.
Now, at 3-0 for the first time since 2016 and just the second time dating back to 2005, Tennessee football is giving its fans something to cheer about legitimately in Heupel’s second year. Covering the 47.5-point spread against Akron is something you can’t ignore and worthy of praise.
Of course, things will be much more memorable for Tennessee football if the Vols can beat Florida next week, which will get them to 4-0 heading into their bye week. At that point, the SEC East is truly on the table, even with the Georgia Bulldogs being as dominant as they are right now.
