Defensive grades

Defensive line: A

LaTrell Bumphus recovered a fumble. Byron Young brought pressure and had two hurries. Tyre West had two tackles for a loss, and James Pearce Jr. and Joshua Josephs each had one. Bryson Eason had a sack. Wherever you looked, Tennessee football had defensive linemen making an impact, whether in mop-up duty or when it mattered, so the unit gets an A.

Linebackers: A-

Once again, the Vols gave up way too much in the intermediate passing game, and that’s on the linebackers. However, they still did enough to get an A. Elijah Herring with two sacks, Solon Page III with three tackles and Jeremy Banks leading the team with five solo tackles, a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble are all enough to warrant an A here.

Defensive back: B+

In addition to that intermediate passing game, with no Warren Burrell, the Vols allowed the 241 passing yards. Shocky Jacques-Louis had nine catches for 103 yards. That keeps this from being in the A-range. Still, Kamal Hadden had a tackle for a loss and should’ve had a pick. Jaylen McCollough had a tackle for a loss. Trevon Flowers helped on Banks’ forced fumble.

Overall defensive grade: A-

Again, it was against Akron, but Tennessee football didn’t allow a touchdown. The Vols held them to 35 yards rushing on 24 carries. What more could you ask for out of this unit? They did everything they were supposed to do.
