Special teams grades:

Place kicking: D+

Chase McGrath suffered his first miss of the year. A Toby Wilson kickoff was returned 50 yards. These two things alone warrant a below average grade. Although McGrath’s miss was from 47 yards and Wilson’s kickoff was late in the game, little errors like that in place kicking bring the grade down, so we had no choice.

Punting: D

He was inconsequential, but Paxton Brooks had two punts for Tennessee football. One only went for 36 yards. The other was a 49-yarder, but it went for a touchback. As a result, Brooks couldn’t get the right balance between when to use his power and when not to, so this is a D.

Return game: B-

Squirrel White had an epic 23-yard punt return that he almost broke. However, Trevon Flowers also had a four-yard punt return, and Jimmy Holiday had 23 yards a kickoff return, which was right at average. As a result, this unit gets just barely an above average grade, carried by the one return White had. He should take over punts full-time.

Overall special teams grade: C-

While the return game was fine because of one play, special teams as a whole left a lot to be desired in this game. At least Tennessee football didn’t miss any extra points, something that has been consistent with the program for the past two years.
