Tennessee football: Did Akron win help Vols at all in Week 3 SEC Power Rankings?
Lost to Penn State Nittany Lions 41-12
Yes, the Auburn Tigers and Mizzou will be playing to avoid last place in our SEC Power Rankings next week. We only have Mizzou down there now because their blowout loss was to a worse team, but Auburn is a lame duck program under Bryan Harsin. It just seems like they could fire him at any time, and it might happen in October.
Auburn looked ugly its first two games, most notably only beating the San Jose State Spartans by one possession. They showed this past weekend that wasn’t a fluke, as they got demolished by the Penn State Nittany Lions. Honestly, it was clear they were bad, but everybody was shocked to find out they were that bad.
In Harsin and Josh Heupel, it’s a tale of opposite trajectories if you look how they started last year at Auburn and Tennessee football respectively. Harsin was the hotter commodity last October, but Heupel now has College GameDay coming to Knoxville, and Harsin is on an extremely hot seat.
Saturday is a must-win for Auburn if they are to stay afloat. This feels like the type of game in which the losing coach gets fired. After this, the Tigers have another home game against the LSU Tigers, and LSU is reeling with a first-year head coach. They actually need to win both, but such an achievement is unlikely right now.
