Tennessee football: Did Akron win help Vols at all in Week 3 SEC Power Rankings?

Lost to Georgia Bulldogs 48-7

To be fair, the South Carolina Gamecocks are the only program in the league to have faced two Power Five teams at this point and at least one on the road. However, they still are the only team in the league below .500, and that loss to the Georgia Bulldogs was embarrassing. Shane Beamer’s team still has a huge hill to climb.

Spencer Rattler is still probably the answer, but these guys have a lot of work to do. If we were to go by projections, South Carolina will climb out of this spot fairly quickly, but right now, their only win is over the Georgia State Panthers. While Georgia State once shocked Tennessee football in 2019, that’s not enough to uplift South Carolina.

This drop isn’t just about the blowout loss, though. Lots of teams are going to suffer that against Georgia. South Carolina also fell because of what other teams did in the process. They still need a Power Five win, and not having one is a major indictment against them.

First, they have to get above .500, and that should happen over the next two weeks, as they host the Charlotte 49ers and South Carolina State Bulldogs. Then they visit the Kentucky Wildcats and host the Texas A&M Aggies, but there are some chances for them to win Power Five games down the stretch, including against Tennessee football.
