Tennessee football: Did Akron win help Vols at all in Week 3 SEC Power Rankings?
Defeated Northern Illinois Huskies 38-28
Yes, the Vanderbilt Commodores are climbing the ladder! They have officially surpassed last year’s win total, and all three of their wins are by multiple scores while both of them were within a field goal last year. Add in the fact that they have two FBS wins against teams that have now won a game, and their resume is solid too.
In fact, Vanderbilt’s only loss is to an undefeated Wake Forest Demon Deacons team. That’s nothing to be ashamed of. Okay, so they still have played three easy teams, and other programs likely would have blown out the Northern Illinois Huskies and the Elon Phoenix.
However, Vandy has a road win, unlike any of the other teams below them, and this is the group of teams in the SEC who haven’t yet beaten a Power Five team. As a result, they should definitely top this list, and Tennessee football may now want to take this game a bit more seriously.
Reality is about to set in, though. This week, they have a trip to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Then they have a week off before hosting Ole Miss and visiting Georgia, so 3-4 is almost automatic. However, Missouri and South Carolina are still on the slate, so there’s an outside chance at five wins. What’s important is that Clark Lea has them going in the right direction.
