Defeated South Florida Bulls 31-28

We gave the Florida Gators a break last week in their loss to the Kentucky Wildcats. They were the only SEC team to play two Power Five teams in back to back weeks, and they started things off with a top 10 win over the Utah Utes. There’s no shame in following that up with a loss to another top 10 team in Kentucky.

However, struggling to put away the South Florida Bulls this past weekend has now raised concerns. Florida still has a winning record and actually beat a Power Five team, enough to put them above the bottom tier in our SEC Power Rankings, but they have issues.

To be fair, there are always growing pains with a first-year head coach, and that’s going to be the case for Florida under Billy Napier. Now, they have the game that always seems to be the one in which they right the ship, as they travel to Tennessee football this week.

As luck has it for Vol fans, a good Florida team always hits its stride by UT, and a bad one always waits until after to collapse. Still, if they can get past this, the schedule looks favorable for a while, as they then host the Eastern Washington Eagles, Missouri and LSU before Georgia. That means winning Saturday makes 5-2 likely by then and 6-1 a possibility.
