Tennessee football: Did Akron win help Vols at all in Week 3 SEC Power Rankings?
Defeated Mississippi State Bulldogs 31-16
We’re talking two or three special teams miscues to keep Brian Kelly’s team from arguably top three in our SEC Power Rankings. They now have a Power Five win in Mississippi State, and they dropped 65 points against the Southern Jaguars the week before. Since the Florida State Seminoles are still undefeated, that’s not a bad loss either.
LSU handling Mississippi State was a great way to show the program is coming again under Kelly. It won’t happen this year, but when you consider the factors working in favor of the program, he’s got a dynasty brewing in Baton Rouge, La., and everybody in the SEC needs to be careful.
For now, focusing on discipline and consistency is the key. If LSU loses games that it shouldn’t this year, those will be the problems, and from a talent perspective, Alabama and Georgia are the only SEC teams that should be better right now. They got their way into the top half of our SEC Power Rankings, though, with that win.
Up next is a home matchup with the New Mexico Lobos. Then they visit a reeling Auburn team before hosting Tennessee football and visiting Florida. All four games are winnable, but three of four are losable, so there is a lot riding on this stretch if they want to have a successful first year under Kelly.
