Non-wideout receivers

Everybody had been talking about Jalin Hyatt all offseason, and he finally delivered. Hyatt had five catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns against Akron, proving that he can fill the void left by Velus Jones Jr. and become a star slot receiver. His play was even more crucial after Cedric Tillman got hurt early.

Meanwhile, Squirrel White had a 47-yard grab. Walker Merrill had two catches for 46 yards and a score. Jimmy Calloway had two catches for 20 yards before his ejection. Meanwhile, Princeton Fant had two catches for 23 yards, Jacob Warren had a 17-yard grab, Hunter Salmon had a nine-yard grab, and the tight ends blocked well all night.

Linebackers

After struggling in the intermediate passing game the first two weeks, Tennessee football’s linebackers put together a more complete performance against Akron. Maybe it was the easier opponent, or maybe it was the fact that Juwan Mitchell was back, but the unit did a lot of good things for the Vols.

Jeremy Banks led the team with five solo tackles. He also helped force a fumble. Elijah Herring came in for mop-up duty and had two sacks. Kalib Perry and Solon Page III were also effective. Combine that with what Aaron Beasley has been doing, and this unit is in great shape.
