Tennessee football stock report after Week 3 of 2022
Stocks to sell
No. 1 cornerback
Warren Burrell was out this week, and let’s face it, he has issues as Tennessee football’s No. 1 cornerback anyway. However, the issue was magnified against Akron. Without him, the Vols kept Kamal Hadden as the No. 2 guy, and he almost had an interception, but they allowed far too many yards through the air.
D.J. Irons completed 32-of-44 passes for 241 yards in that game. Most notably, Pitt receiver Shocky Jacques-Louis had nine catches for 103 yards, and that is who Burrell would have been guarding. There’s no denying that this is an issue, and if not resolved, it will bite them in SEC play. It didn’t show up last week, but it’s a falling stock.
Quarterback play
Yes, quarterback play is a stock that will fall. It’s not showing now because Hendon Hooker was 14-of-18 for 298 yards and two touchdowns, Joe Milton III was 4-of-5 for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and Tayven Jackson was 2-of-2 for 28 yards while rushing for a touchdown. None of them turned it over.
However, Hooker’s accuracy has been looking worse this year, and that showed in this game. He missed another clear touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman, and one of his deep scores to Jalin Hyatt was actually underthrown. Meanwhile, Milton hasn’t shown enough to show his accuracy is back. As a result, Tennessee football may have an issue here.
