8. Al Wilson

We mentioned Dale Carter and Heath Shuler on the previous page as players who had legendary performances against the Florida Gators for Tennessee football. Travis Stephens deserves a mention too after rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns in the Vols’ huge win over Florida in The Swamp back in 2001.

However, if you’re going to name one player who is famous for his legendary performance against Florida, you have to name Al Wilson. The heart and soul of the 1998 national championship team, Wilson’s performance against Florida that year is one of the greatest in college football history.

Despite no longer having Peyton Manning and needing to play much more conservatively than usual, the Vols were able to pull out a 20-17 overtime win, arguably their greatest home victory ever, because of what Wilson did. He forced three fumbles in the first half, and while UT only got three points out of them, it also stopped a touchdown.

Florida had five turnovers in the game altogether, which was the difference. In overtime, Wilson had a huge hit that forced a 3rd and long, which Florida couldn’t convert, setting up their missed field goal to lose. That performance combined with his leadership qualities on the year is why he’s a great candidate to go on the show.
