Tennessee football Week 2 NFL recap: Former Vols shine on defense
Former Vols who did not play
Matthew Butler – DT – Las Vegas Raiders
The fifth-round draft pick from Tennessee football didn’t see the field for the second week in a row, and you have to wonder what’s going on. Kendal Vickers stepped up for the Raiders in their loss to the Cardinals, but there was a lot of hype behind Matthew Butler being a steal. It’s not materializing right now, though.
Joshua Dobbs – QB – Cleveland Browns
This is to be expected, as he is still the Cleveland Browns’ backup quarterback. However, Josh Dobbs once again saw no action, as Jacoby Brissett played every snap on offense while the team lost 31-30 to the New York Jets. Nobody will blame Brissett for that loss, though, so Dobbs will still be a backup next week.
Cade Mays – OL – Carolina Panthers
He didn’t have the same hype as Matthew Butler, but Cade Mays is another draft pick in the trenches from Tennessee football who made the roster this offseason. However, the sixth-round pick missed his second straight game as the Carolina Panthers lost 19-16 to the New York Giants.
Former Vols on practice squads
Micah Abernathy – DB – Green Bay Packers
Theo Jackson – DB – Tennessee Titans
John Kelly – RB – Cleveland Browns
Jonathan Kongbo – DE – Denver Broncos
Khalil McKenzie – OL – Baltimore Ravens
Overall, it was a bit of an underwhelming week for Tennessee football, but plenty of young players showed promise. Still, four of the Vols’ five draft picks haven’t yet played at all in the pros, and one just barely played this past weekend, so there are plenty of questions surrounding former UT players in the pros.
