Just when everybody was ready to write off Brian Kelly’s team, the LSU Tigers turn right around and get their first signature win under him, blowing out the Mississippi State Bulldogs 31-16 at home. LSU should be 3-0 right now and would be if not for some awful special teams miscues.

Now they get another cupcake before truly beginning the gauntlet of SEC play, which starts with a visit to Auburn and then a visit from Tennessee football. The win over the Southern Jaguars got their confidence up two weeks ago, and such a blowout here could do the same thing for them.

Coming into town are the New Mexico Lobos. Led by third-year head coach Danny Gonzales, UNM is trying to get its first winning season ever under him. They are 2-1 right now, only losing to the Boise State Broncos, and they just blew out the UTEP Miners, so they could be an imposing team on Kelly and co. if they aren’t careful.

Prediction

LSU appears to be rolling, but there are still growing pains that come with a first-year head coach, particularly Kelly. As a result, the offense will sputter in this one, and that will keep them from covering. They’ll still win comfortably, but it’ll be closer than it should be. The game hits the over, though, because that’s just too low.
