Record against the spread (all documented) on College GameDay: 8-7-2

There are four games that we can’t document when it comes to the spread: Georgia in 1995, Alabama in 1995, Florida in 1996 and Notre Dame in 1999. To be fair, the Vols were the higher-ranked team in all four games and were almost certainly favored against Notre Dame and Georgia.

Still, take those games out, and Tennessee football has been solid relative to projections on College GameDay. Their biggest win over the spread was at Florida in 2001, when they won as 18.5-point underdogs. It’s safe to say they probably covered whatever spread existed against Alabama in 1995 and Notre Dame in 1999.

Record in games as documented favorite on College GameDay: 3-3

Yes, the Vols’ record on College GameDay is 9-12, but in the 17 games we tracked the spread, they were underdogs in 11 of them. As a result, to underachieve they would have to be favorites in all four of those games they mentioned, and it’s likely they were underdogs against either Alabama in 1995 or Florida in 1996.

Anyway, before 2016, this wasn’t a good stat for the Vols. Two of their wins as the documented favorite on GameDay happened that year, as they beat Virginia Tech and Florida. Their other win as the favorite came in that 2006 South Carolina game.

Record in games as documented favorite at home on College GameDay: 1-3

Only that Florida win in 2016 can be counted on this one, although to be fair, they were almost certainly favored against Notre Dame and Georgia. As a result, it’s safe to say they’re no more than one game below .500 here, depending on that 1996 Florida spread. Losses were to Florida in 2002 and 2012 and Auburn in 2004.
