Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols’ 38-33 win vs. Florida
3. Everybody stepped up in Cedric Tillman’s absence.
Don’t worry, we’re going to talk plenty about Hendon Hooker over the next two weeks. He got hurt in the first half and came in to pick up 461 yards of total offense along with three total touchdowns, and he did it with his go-to receiver, Cedric Tillman out, against a secondary that has been good at intercepting passes.
Well, what helped Hooker was a collection of weapons. Three different receivers had over 50 yards in Bru McCoy, who went for over 100 with a touchdown, Ramel Keyton, who had 69 yards and an epic diving catch, and Jalin Hyatt. The tight ends stepped up for the Vols too. Princeton Fant had the fumble, but he had four catches for 42 yards. Jacob Warren had a 45-yard catch.
Jabari Small stepped up in the passing game for the Vols as well, catching three passes for 32 yards and a key touchdown. Simply put, everybody who needed to step up stepped up, and of course, the running game was superb. Along with Hooker, Small had 90 rushing yards and a score, Jaylen Wright had a score, and up front, Cooper Mays dominated the day.
Josh Heupel showed he has truly built a lot of depth on this team, and that was all on display in this game. No way did anybody think when he was hired that the Vols would be in a situation to be able to replace their biggest offensive weapon in just 13 months.
