Six years before that 2012 matchup, Tennessee football’s last performance on College GameDay was in November against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Vols lost that game 31-14, partially because they didn’t have Erik Ainge, their starting quarterback who was injured in this game two weeks earlier.

That game was against the South Carolina Gamecocks, and GameDay was in town for that one too. The Vols were actually rolling this time in October. They had suffered a 21-20 loss to Florida early in the year but were red-hot at this point, entering the game on a four-game winning streak and in the top 10 at 6-1.

It was supposed to be a rebound season from an awful 5-6 campaign the year before. However, South Carolina was led by Steve Spurrier in his second year, and they beat UT the year before. At 5-2 and playing at home, the GameDay crew arrived. Lee Corso bucked the rest of the GameDay crew and picked the Vols.

Well, that turned out to be right. The Vols had some luck in this one, catching a tipped opass for a touchdown, and they forced three turnovers while only having one. With 17 fourth-quarter points, they pulled out a 31-24 win. However, a draw play got Ainge hurt late, and that forced him to miss the next two games, against the LSU Tigers and Arkansas. UT lost both.
