No, Tennessee football has never beaten Florida when Lee Corso donned their headgear. That may not be a good sign. The first time the Vols ever won with him was the first time he ever put on UT headgear, and that was when they were in the national championship hunt in 1999.

It was an amazing setting for the Vols. Their only loss on the year at the time was at Florida, when Corso picked the Gators, by two points. However, heading into this day, they were ranked No. 4 behind three undefeated teams, the Penn State Nittany Lion, Florida State Seminoles and Virginia Tech Hokies.

Penn State was upset by the Minnesota Golden Gophers earlier in the day. Notre Dame was No. 24 at the time, and given Virginia Tech’s easy schedule, that meant a win here by the Vols would likely put them No. 2 in the BCS. Corso picked them to do just that, and they delivered.

UT dominated the game 38-14, taking complete control from start to finish, as Tee Martin threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. It was the last great win of the greatest decade of the modern era for the Vols, and it did get them to No. 2 in the next week.

However, Tennessee football lost the following Saturday in an upset to the Arkansas Razorbacks, ending their national title hopes. This game, though, was a memorable one, and after picking against them four times, Corso finally picked the Vols here.
