Defeated Florida Gators 38-33

Call us crazy all you want. Tennessee football has beaten two Power Five teams, one on the road and one at home. The Vols actually had much more control over Florida, leading 38-21 midway through the fourth. Then they took their foot off the pedal too early, and they allowed a late onside kick, which made it look closer than it was.

Florida is the best 2-2 Power Five team out there. The Pittsburgh Panthers were supposed to have a drop-off, but UT is the only team to beat them so far, and they also have a Power Five win. Oh, and all of the Vols’ victories are over FBS programs, so they have a lot to be proud of.

Two close wins works against them to a degree, but a close win over Florida beats a 17-point win over Kent State. As a result, just for this week, the Vols are atop our SEC Power Rankings, although with a bye Saturday, that’s not likely to hold for too long.

After the bye, Tennessee football visits LSU. That’s actually a winnable game, so 5-0 is on the table. Then they host Alabama in a sure loss, but they follow that up with the UT-Martin Skyhawks and Kentucky at home. That puts 7-1 on the table with a chance to win the East in play as they visit Georgia to open November, so watch out for Josh Heupel’s team.
