Defeated New Mexico Lobos 38-0

If not for a couple of crazy special teams plays in the opener, we’d be talking about the red-hot start Brian Kelly has enjoyed with LSU. When you consider the fact that the Florida State Seminoles, the one team to beat them, are currently undefeated and in the top 25, it’s pretty obvious that wasn’t a bad loss for Kelly’s first game.

LSU responded immediately with that blowout win over the Southern Jaguars. They got a convincing win over Mississippi State, and this past weekend, they covered the spread and dominated the New Mexico Lobos. This is a good team, and it’s the closest to being undefeated among the teams with a loss in the league.

As a result, LSU is the highest-rated one-loss team in our SEC Power Rankings. Kelly quietly has something building down in Baton Rouge. Their resume combined with how they looked in their one loss gives them that advantage, and they may take another huge step in the next two weeks.

After all, they get to visit a bad Auburn team this week, then they host Tennessee football the next week before visiting Florida. All three games are winnable, so we might very well soon see a 6-1 LSU team that is generating tons of headlines for the first-year splash it made under Kelly.
