Return game

Not recovering that onside kick late in the game is what will stand out. However, Tennessee football has low-key found its footing in the return game. Jimmy Holiday had kickoff returns of 34 and 27 yards over the weekend, exactly the type of numbers you want out of your kickoff returner. He is becoming a true threat.

Combine that with the previous week, when Squirrel White had a 23-yard punt return, and the Vols have some weapons. Again, this is being overlooked because of Trevon Flowers’ struggles before White got in there and the onside kick, but this unit is getting a lot better, so watch out.

Safeties

Trevon Flowers and Jaylen McCollough were part of the atrocious pass defense over the weekend. However, they had to overcompensate for issues at cornerback and with Tamarion McDonald getting beat. When Warren Burrell returns, they’ll have a bit more freedom to do what we all know they’re capable of doing.

McCollough is a true weapon who hasn’t hit his potential this year yet, and Flowers is one of the most versatile defensive backs. Together, after the bye, these two should be elite once again. It was just not the right game for them to try to show how good they are.
