4. Cleaning up penalties

They were better against Florida, but the fact of the matter is Tennessee football has a major issue when it comes to penalties. If there’s one improvement the Vols have made this year, ironically, it’s that they’re winning games when they commit a litany of penalties.

UT is averaging 71.5 penalty yards per game. That’s tied for No. 113 in the country in fewest penalty yards per game average. They also commit seven and a half a game. There hasn’t been one type of penalty they lean towards either. The Vols seem to commit them all.

Already, they have committed double-digit penalties twice this year. To be fair, many of these penalties were extremely close calls. Bru McCoy had two offensive pass interference penalties against the Akron Zips that were highly questionable, and a Geraldy Mincey hold that waived off a Hendon Hooker touchdown run against Florida was also questionable.

However, there were two formational penalties against Florida on the first drive. Also, that’s not the first Mincey hold that waived off a touchdown run by Hooker, as he did the same thing at Pitt. Fortunatelt for the Vols, Hooker threw a touchdown pass on the very next play both times, but these issues will catch up with them.
