Tennessee football falls after not playing in Week 5 SEC Power Rankings
Lost to LSU Tigers 21-17
Again, crazy parity strikes. The only reason the Auburn Tigers are above the other three teams in our SEC Power Rankings but not above anybody else is because their one Power Five win is over one of those teams. Auburn escaped with the luckiest win ever against Mizzou two Saturdays ago, saving Bryan Harsin’s job.
However, like Mizzou, they played way over their heads the next week and put up a huge fight at home against the LSU Tigers. Perhaps Brian Kelly’s team was looking ahead to Tennessee football. Either way, Auburn almost won that, and despite their blowout loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions, they may be rejuvenated now.
Still, this team has a lot to prove going forward, and there is nothing yet to suggest the season won’t unravel. Even if they stay this high in our power rankings, the West is just so much deeper, so that would signify a pretty bad collapse en route to a losing season.
We’ll find out soon enough. Up next for this team is a visit to Georgia, and immediately after that they visit Ole Miss. If they can pull off just one win, they’ll be in a lot better shape than anybody expected, but it doesn’t get any easier for them after LSU.
