Fireworks began immediately for Tennessee football in their 40-13 win at the LSU Tigers Saturday. The Vols, ranked No. 8 in both polls heading into the game, were the favorites, but it was by no more than a field goal anywhere you looked. That made sense. They were playing in Death Valley, and UT hasn’t been trustworthy in years.

However, the Vols immediately turned this into their favor, recovering the opening kickoff. They went from that to a 20-0 win and never let up. In the process, UT scored its first victory over LSU since 2005, its largest margin of victory in Death Valley ever and its largest margin of victory against LSU overall since 1940.

Now, there are moments LSU threatened, despite what the scoreboard shows, but the Vols managed to snuff out any comeback opportunity whenever they needed to. Let’s look back at what put the game away. Here are highlights from Tennessee football’s victory.

Not every highlight was available on here. The Vols had two other fourth down stops that were key. One was on a 4th and 1 when LSU was running the ball in their territory, and the other was on a fourth down in UT territory after they scored their first touchdown.

Sticking with special teams, which was a strength of the day for the Vols, Dee Williams had a 58-yard return to set up the Vols’ first field goal of the game. It was his first play ever for the Vols as a junior college transfer who was set to see action at cornerback this year.

In the second half, Tennessee football methodically moved the ball to pull away for the dominating victory. Now, the Vols are 5-0 for the first time since 2016 and will be undefeated while facing the Alabama Crimson Tide for the first time since 1998.
