Tennessee football’s top five performers in 40-13 win at LSU
17-of-27 for 239 yards, 2 TDs; 10 carries, 56 yards
What more can Hendon Hooker do? Okay, he did have two fumbles, but neither was his fault. Once again, Tennessee football’s signal-caller proved he’s as deserving of the Heisman as much as anybody. It was a vintage performance by Hooker against a Power Five foe, something he has done in every big game this year.
In this game, Hooker had some help early on, as the Vols’ first 10 points were set up by big plays on special teams. However, up 13-0 in the second quarter, Hooker finally came alive. That 45-yard touchdown pass to Jalin Hyatt was a perfect throw, which was a huge deal, as accuracy on some deep balls have been his one weakness this year.
Hooker had a key 26-yard run on the Vols’ opening drive of the second half to score and go up 30-7. That Bru McCoy reception at the end of the first half to set up the Vols’ go-ahead field goal was also a great play. Simply put, whenever the Vols needed him, he stepped up, as usual.
The bigger the moment this year, the more elite Hooker becomes, and he is continuing to have one of the most legendary seasons in Tennessee football history for a quarterback. So many other people stepped up on Saturday that Hooker could have been forgotten about, but he was still clearly the game’s best player.
