Special teams

It was a superb performance for Tennessee football on special teams over the weekend. Their only blemish was a missed field goal by Chase McGrath, and that was from 50 yards out. McGrath was the one to earn Special Teams Player of the Week. The Vols recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and had a 58-yard punt return by Dee Williams.

Paxton Brooks, meanwhile, pinned LSU inside the two-yard line on a punt. This all won’t last, though. LSU has had issues on special teams all year, and the Vols were able to cash in coming off a bye week. Long-term, there will still likely be some problems with UT’s kicking game.

Wide receivers

Okay, hear me out. The receivers are still great. Jalin Hyatt had two touchdowns while Bru McCoy went over 140 yards for a reason. However, that stat line combined with Cedric Tillman looking to return soon has everybody maybe just a bit higher on this unit than they should be.

Remember, LSU plays a lot of press man coverage, and that benefits a physical receiver like McCoy and allows a speedster like Hyatt to sneak into open space. Hyatt’s touchdown was also just a great play-call. Tennessee football is still good at receiver, but the unit probably won’t be delivering in the way they’re expected to down the road if it’s based on this game.
