Ranking Tennessee football’s 10 wins with College GameDay in attendance
Sept. 10, 2016
It’s ironic. Justin Fuente’s early success with the Virginia Tech Hokies, which happened this season, was a reason for Hendon Hooker committing there. Fuente was in his first year after coaching the Memphis Tigers for four seasons, and he was replacing a legend in Frank Beamer. Expectations were low for VT.
On the other side, Tennessee football was the favorite to win the SEC East this year, as Butch Jones’ four years of work seemed to have finally paid off. Adding to that momentum, these two teams would play at the Bristol Motor Speedway in front of the largest crowd in college football history. It was a chance for UT to put on a show.
Lee Corso put on a Vols racing helmet in picking them, and despite falling behind 14-0 early, they took off in the second quarter. Rocky Top went on a run, forcing numerous Virginia Tech turnovers and flat-out dominating them throughout the day to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Like South Carolina, this was a GameDay win against an unranked team. However, VT actually went on a roll after that. They shocked the world by winning the ACC Coastal Division and finishing with a 10-4 record, so this turned into a solid win for the Vols.
