It wasn’t your typical Georgia Bulldogs team. Tennessee football was coming off an 8-4 campaign in 1994, but the stage had been set for some huge years ahead with Peyton Manning entering his sophomore season in 1995. After beating the East Carolina Pirates 27-7, this was set to be the game that put Manning on the map.

On the other side, UGA was unranked. Ray Goff was entering his seventh season, coming off a 6-4-1 campaign in 1994, and the Dawgs were simply struggling to keep up the success they had built with Vince Dooley in the 1970s and 1980s. This could be their comeback game.

Well, although Georgia, who beat South Carolina 42-23 to start the year, was unranked while the Vols were in the top 10, the game became a fight. UGA struck first, and Manning was locked in a chess match with the Dawgs all game long. On the final drive, though, Manning and Jay Graham marched down the field.

Freshman Jeff Hall came out and nailed a game-winning field goal to give the Vols a win. This was GameDay’s first ever trip to a Tennessee football game. It marked the Vols’ arrival into the mid-1990s, as they would be the best team of the next four years. Georgia, meanwhile, stumbled to 6-6 and fired Goff at the end of the year.
