33. 840. 38. 839. Final

Sept. 24, 2022

This year’s matchup between Tennessee football and Florida had everything. If you want to just talk about the impact of the crowd, you couldn’t beat what they brought to the table here with Checker Neyland, fan support and the fun of College GameDay. Lee Corso showed his love and picked the Vols, and UT was two-score favorites.

Of course, it was weird for the Vols to be two-score favorites to a team that had beaten them 16 of the last 17 times and five straight times. However, Florida, which was 2-1, had just barely beaten the South Florida Bulls. The Vols were 3-0, although both teams had Power Five wins.

Rocky Top was ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the Coaches Poll. Florida was ranked No. 20 in the AP Poll and No. 22 in the Coaches Poll. Despite all the hoopla, the Vols trailed 14-10 late in the first half. However, a 99-yard drive to end that half and then a touchdown drive to open the second half put them up 24-14.

It was a shootout after that, but Florida never came back. The Vols built a 38-21 lead and held on to win 38-33, although Florida threatened by recovering a late onside kick. The curse truly did seem alive, but the Vols were able to get the victory.
