Ranking Tennessee football’s 10 wins with College GameDay in attendance
Sept. 24, 2016
Although more energy surrounds Tennessee football’s most recent win over Florida than what happened in 2016, the fact of the matter is in the moment, 2016 was better. College GameDay had come to town, and Phillip Fulmer and Steve Spurrier were guest pickers. Lee Corso brought out Smokey only to pick Florida.
At the time, Florida had won 11 straight against UT. Their past two wins were each by one point after trailing by two scores in the fourth quarter. The Vols just seemed snakebitten. They were 3-0 entering this game, No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the Coaches Poll. Florida was also 3-0, No. 19 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll.
In this one, Florida shockingly jumped out to a 21-0 lead. All the psychological edges they had over UT were on display. It was 21-3 at halftime. However, in the second half, Joshua Dobbs unleashed, throwing four touchdowns passes and running for another. The defense didn’t allow a first down until the Vols went up 38-21.
Years of frustration were unleashed in that one, wonderful half. Ending a longer streak, the game being a more quality win since Florida was undefeated and such a perfect second half made this a better win. Now, it didn’t last, as we know. However, in the moment, this was one of the best.
