Ranking Tennessee football’s 10 wins with College GameDay in attendance
Oct. 10, 1998
During this time, College GameDay was in the midst of peak Tennessee football hate. Chris Fowler made an off-color joke about UT fans in trailer parks after Peyton Manning lost the Heisman Trophy to Charles Woodson in 1997. As a result, GameDay didn’t show up to Knoxville when UT beat Florida 20-17 in the second game of 1998.
That was a top six matchup. Well, they showed up for this one. After a 4-0 start, the Vols limped to a 17-9 victory over a bad Auburn Tigers team in a game where Jamal Lewis, their offensive star, suffered a season-ending injury. They were No. 4 in the AP Poll and No. 5 in the Coaches Poll.
Georgia, meanwhile, looked to be returning to its powerhouse days with a 4-0 start in Jim Donnan’s third year thanks to freshman quarterback Quincy Carter. The week before, they beat the No. 6 LSU Tigers on the road 28-27, and they were No. 7 in both polls.
Without Lewis, everybody picked Georgia, including Lee Corso, who as we said, hated the Vols at the time. Well, Rocky Top showed why it would win the national championship. The offense showed it had plenty of weapons without Lewis, and the defense flat-out shut down Georgia’s offense in a shocking 22-3 blowout. This was the turning point game for Tee Martin.
