Oct. 14, 1995

Let’s take you back to 1995 once again. While the Georgia win that year marked the emergence of Tennessee football as the dominant team of the mid to late part of the decade, this win was the watershed moment of that first season. College GameDay was in attendance, and UT was in a frustrating skid against Alabama. Sound familiar? It was also GameDay’s last UT-Bama game.

The Vols hadn’t beaten the Tide since 1985 at the time. Only once in that period did they not lose. They tied in 1993 despite leading 17-9 late before allowing a touchdown and two-point conversion. That game was retroactively awarded to UT due to violations, but it felt like a loss when it was played.

Amidst all that, the Vols were finally ready to end this skid, and they did it quickly. On the first play from scrimmage, Peyton Manning hit Joey Kent for an 80-yard touchdown pass. That sparked a 21-0 lead, and the third touchdown was scored of a Manning bootleg that became a trademark of his throughout his career.

Jay Graham then dashed 75 yards in the third quarter to put them up 35-14 and clinch it. While the Vols were ranked No. 6, Alabama was No. 12, and the game was in Birmingham. Tennessee football unleashed years of frustration in this blowout to win 41-14, and they started their own seven-game winning streak over the Tide.
