8. Penalties

We go from two elite red zone teams to two teams who are horrible at avoiding penalties. This was an issue for Tennessee football before the bye week, and quite honestly, the bye didn’t do anything to change that. It was hidden because of how badly they blew out LSU.

However, the Vols committed 12 penalties in that game, surrendering 107 yards. For the year, they are No. 125 in fewest penalty yards per game, surrendering 78.6. They are No. 122 in fewest penalties per game, committing eight and a half. This comes with Josh Heupel’s offense and his tempo, but it creates issues.

Alabama has also been problematic here. The Tide are No. 117 in fewest penalties per game at just over eight, and they are also No. 117 in fewest penalty yards per game at 71.5. They only had six against Texas A&M, but they were for 73 yards, so they certainly caused problems.

Expect lots of penalties between these two in this game, but the one that has more issues will be in huge trouble. Right now, this would seem to favor the Tide based on the fact that Tennessee football got somehow worse off the bye week. However, they are both inconsistent, so this could go either way.
