Tennessee football has played Alabama 10 other times with both teams in top 10
Oct. 23, 1999
One of Tennessee football’s best wins in the series, the Vols were trying to win five straight against Alabama for the first time ever. UT came in at 4-1, defending national champions and No. 5 in both polls. They most recently beat the No. 10 ranked and undefeated Georgia Bulldogs, their only loss coming by two to the Florida Gators on the road.
On the other side, Alabama was 5-1. They lost a shocker to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the third game of the season but bounced back to upset that same Florida team in overtime, part of a three-game winning streak that also included the Arkansas Razorbacks and Ole Miss Rebels, all top 25 teams.
As a result, Bama came in right at No. 10 in the AP Poll. It seemed like they were going to further prove that early loss was a fluke too, as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead. However, the Vols rebounded to tie it 7-7, and then Tee Martin took over in the second half for two more scores.
Martin, an Alabama native, ran for two touchdowns, and the Vols won 21-7. It was probably their most impressive win in 1999, as Alabama, clearly the inferior team, went on to win the SEC Championship game because the Vols shared a division with Florida.
