There’s no greater irony than this game. It’s a tie that felt like a loss for Tennessee football in the moment, but it has been awarded as a win to the Vols retroactively due to Alabama having an ineligible player on that team. Technically, it means that 1995 game didn’t end the streak the way everybody thought at the time.

Anyway, heading into this game, Alabama was the hottest team in football. They were defending national champions and on a 28-game winning streak. This was Gene Stallings’ program at its best. Somehow, though, they were only ranked No. 2 in the nation, as the media darling Florida State Seminoles were No. 1 all year.

While they were 5-0, the Vols came into this game on the other side 5-1, their only loss coming at Florida 41-34. With Heath Shuler at quarterback and Phillip Fulmer in his first full year, this team was loaded. However, in addition to Alabama’s overall winning streak, they had won seven straight over the Vols specifically.

Well, surprisingly, a UT team carried by a dominant offense controlled this game with elite defense. Tennessee football dominated most of the game and led 17-9 late. Alabama, however, scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion late to finish in a tie. Their win streaks ended, but for UT, they should’ve won, so it felt like a loss.
