Tennessee football has played Alabama 10 other times with both teams in top 10
Oct. 21, 1967
Welcome to the peak of the Doug Dickey Bill Battle years. It was perfect timing for Tennessee football, as the Vols were arriving with their T-formation that Dickey installed in 1964 thanks to their veteran leadership. Alabama, meanwhile, was falling a bit behind the times under Bear Bryant, as he hadn’t rolled out the wishbone yet.
After a top 10 finish in 1965 and a Gator Bowl win in 1966, the Vols opened 1967 with with a close 20-16 loss to the UCLA Bruins on the road. However, they then beat Auburn and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, which got them to 2-1 and ranked No. 7 nationally.
Alabama, meanwhile, was coming off an 11-0 campaign. They tied Florida State to open the season but then the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Ole Miss Rebels and Vanderbilt Commodores to get to No. 6 nationally. Playing this game at home and having not lost to the Vols since 1960, they were the favorites.
Well, Albert Dorsey had other goals in mind. In one of the greatest defensive performances in school history, Dorsey came away with three interceptions. He ran one back for a touchdown, helping UT secure a 24-13 win. This propelled the Vols to a 9-1 regular season, an SEC Championship and a retroactive national championship.
